A DRY WHITE SEASON

1989. Stars Donald Sutherland, Zakes Mokae, Jürgen Prochnow.

A film about apartheid in South Africa, focusing on the Soweto massacre. A very brutal movie, not for the squeamish. Jürgen is genuinely frightening, and fascinating, as a torturer/murderer who doesn't seem to understand why nobody likes him. The ending is spoiled by excessive melodrama, but otherwise a superb film if you can take the disturbing subject matter and the gore. Top-notch performances all the way around.
