[DUNE is a mess, but you gotta love it. So much has been written about it - just pick up any book about bad movies or film cult classics - that we wouldn't dare start all over again, but the bottom line is that it makes no sense whatsoever.

What they needed in Duke Leto was a guy who can say crummy lines as if they're good ones, and who knows how to look benignly aristocratic yet authoritative while standing around not saying anything - especially when he's standing around in military uniforms and rubber suits. They couldn't have made a better choice than Prochnow. The aggravating thing is that he is half of a great couple in this one - the other half is Francesca Annis - but while the characters are obviously deeply in love, they never even speak to each other in the movie. Boo hiss! Annis joins Ingeborga and Elizabeth Morehead on the list of babes we'd like to see with Jürgen in a GOOD movie sometime. -ed.]
