THE KEEP

1983. Stars Ian McKellan, Alberta Watson, Scott Glenn, Jürgen Prochnow.

Artistic horror movie in which WWII German soldiers set up camp in a Romanian keep deep in a mountain pass. When special effects start killing them off, Jürgen's command is taken over by another officer who doesn't believe in special effects. Religious overtones make this a thought-provoking film and there's a mystery about the nature of the forces involved that keeps you guessing for a long time. Jürgen is very enjoyable as a "good" Nazi who resorts to alcohol and sarcasm as his frustration increases. They show the back of his head too much, but it's still better than what they did to him in THE SEVENTH SIGN.
