DER FALL LUCONA
A great film! I liked "Der Fall Lucona" very much, it was exciting right to the end. Not only did Jürgen look and act wonderful, he had a worthy opponent in David Suchet as the charismatic Waltz. This confrontation between the criminal, but certainly colourful character Waltz and the dour, politically correct journalist Strasser was brilliant. Unluckily, one can't even say, that the plot is unrealistic! I wouldn't put anything past politicians anymore.
Oh, NOW I understand Wing Commander. Terrific chemistry between Jürgen Prochnow and David Suchet in Der Fall Lucona; it looked like they really enjoyed working together, and I bet they got a kick out of having a chance to do it again - even in a thing like Das Spaceship.I watched this without reading the synopsis first just to see if I could follow the story and had no problem figuring out all the main points, and nearly all the minor ones.
My only two complaints about Lucona are that the search for the ship took too long, dragging the film out a bit, and the explosion/sinking where the people get thrown around and ditched into the ocean wasn't very well done. Otherwise, it was swell - there were enough complications in the plot to keep the story moving and keep you guessing a little, but I think the real credit for this one has to go to the cast for superior ensemble character acting. Rudy Waltz is a hammy, melodramatic sort of guy and Suchet takes great relish in this role without turning it into a caricature; Waltz has real depth to him. I think I'll add David Suchet to my List of Favorite Actors.
Jürgen wisely balanced Waltz with a low-key Strasser and still managed to be fun in the role. The two actors played off each other extremely well. Nerve-wracking sequence where Waltz tips Strasser over the balcony, by the way; the attack really startled me. And it was kind of nice seeing Jürgen sitting in a courtroom just as a spectator for once!
